abstract = "Agriculture (crops, forestry and livestock) plays an important
role in the economy of Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) state, in
mid-western Brazil (357.124,96 km²). An accurate assessment of
crop area coverage and spatial distribution is the basis to many
decision-making policies affecting the logistics of crop
production and food supply management. From crop health,
harvesting, and storage to food distribution, and road and railway
networks, the knowledge of the location of each component is
essential for a synoptic understanding of the process.
Historically the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute
(IBGE) has provided summaries of area occupied by crop per city,
but makes no reference as to how such areas are distributed within
each city limits. Remote Sensing techniques have proved to be very
effective in mapping large crop areas, at low and medium scale.
This work assessed the individual and combined capabilities of
medium to high spatial resolution remotely sensed imagery to
accurately map and quantify crop areas. Also, we evaluated the
effectiveness of a freely distributed GIS software to train
personnel of the local Federation of Agriculture. Supervised
Classification techniques were applied to multi-temporal MODIS
imagery, multi-spectral TM imagery, and topographic data. The
resulting classified image (1:1.250.000 scale) was then manually
edited over LISS-III image to increase spatial definition,
resulting in a 1:100.000 scale map. Final results were validated
with field data and interviews with local players such as farmers'
associations, IBGE, and agriculture-related professionals. Future
efforts should go towards monitoring in near-real time seeding and
harvesting dynamics.",
